German Chocolate Poke Cake

For the Cake
  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix Use a standard box mix.
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs Can substitute with applesauce or mashed bananas.
For the Topping
  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut To enhance flavor, consider toasting before adding.
  • 1 cup chopped pecans Can swap with sunflower seeds for nut-free option.
  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup chocolate frosting Alternatively, use cream cheese frosting.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, water, oil, and eggs. Mix until well combined.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  5. Poke holes all over the warm cake using a fork.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix together the sweetened condensed milk, coconut, and pecans. Pour this mixture over the cake, making sure to fill the holes.
  7. Once the cake is completely cool, top with chocolate frosting.
  8. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

If you have leftovers, store in the fridge for 3-4 days. It can also be frozen for up to 3 months. For extra decadence, serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
